In recognition of Wrekin U3A’s 30th Anniversary and the UK’s 40th Anniversary we were delighted to welcome to our September 2022 general meeting the Shropshire born Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire, Mrs Anna Turner.

She spoke of being delighted to be appointed in 2019 to represent the late Queen Elizabeth ll and now King Charles lll; her commitment to volunteering, and to helping others, which included working with Samaritans, charities for the blind, Army Cadets as well as serving as a Magistrate for 27 years and serving on the board of visitors for H.M. Prison, Stoke Heath.

Lady Lord-Lieutenants wear a badge of office, rather than a uniform, to indicate their position and on her visit to us she wore a beautiful brooch featuring the Tudor rose surmounted with a crown on a bow of white and magenta ribbon.

She also described her attendance in Westminster Abbey for the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth ll as being truly memorable and emotional for those who were present.

I am sure members of Wrekin U3A will remember her visit with pleasure.

Our other visitor on this occasion was Lesley Smith, a medical historian well known for her costumed portrayals of a variety of historical characters and on this occasion she was Mrs Margaret Thatcher. Lesley entertained us with humour describing the journey from childhood in a Grantham grocer’s shop; the time at Oxford University gaining a degree in chemistry and also law and how as a woman she survived in a male dominated institution to her becoming the UK’s first woman Prime Minister.

On the afternoon of 27th September 2022 in Shifnal Village Hall, the Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire met Mrs Margaret Thatcher and we have the photographs to prove it!!
