In February 2014 members of Wrekin u3a embarked on our first ‘Snowflake Break’ in Scotland and we were introduced to The Duke of Gordon Hotel, Kingussie Nr. Aviemore. Over the years since then we’ve returned for another four ‘Snowflake Breaks’. After our last visit in February 2024, I had the thought that it would be interesting to see the Scottish Highlands in late spring/early summer. Hence this ‘Highland Spring Fling’ visit in May. In fact the weather was perfect for us and we were fortunate to enjoy the spectacular views and scenery in the most wonderful summer sunshine. I believe it surpassed all of our expectations. There were quite a number of ‘first timers’ on this holiday and spending days and evenings together means many new friendships have been made. Link to full report

Past Visit - Cream of Cornwall 11 - 15 October 2024 Below
Cream of Cornwall 11-15 October 2024.
A hectic but happy time was had by all during our Wrekin u3a Cultural Visit stay at the Rosemundy House Hotel, St Agnes from where we spent three full days taking in the sights, sounds and sun-shine of autumnal Cornwall. The Lost Gardens of Heligan was a particular highlight. Here many members survived The Jungle, and some intrepid explorers even made it to and returned from The Lost Valley! Just as well be-cause they would have hated missing the Mevagissy Sea Shanty Festival.
The energetic singing resonated through the town from down at the Quay, where the music and lively crowds made for a memorable experience. Included on other days out were two excellent guided tours of Pendennis Castle and Truro Cathedral where one of our members Mary was able to share the special family link she has with the Boer War Memorial (A Walk Down Memory Lane). There were also visits to Lands’ End, Marazion and St Ives which completed what proved to be a packed programme full of Cornish delights.

Cream of Cornwall - First-time u3a Travellers
David and I embarked on our first holiday with the Wrekin u3a to Cornwall but hope it will not be our last. We had not been on a coach trip for over 50 years but relished the idea of not having to worry about long distance driving, planning routes, traffic jams, car parks and narrow country lanes! All were expertly taken care of by Simon, our driver, who transported us safely and competently throughout. From start to finish we were well looked after, both at the hotel - where we were well fed and entertained each evening - and during the many cultural and varied places of interest we visited. Thank you Denise for all your hard work in making this such a successful trip.

A Walk Down Memory Lane
When I booked my place on the ‘Cream of Cornwall’ cultural visit I knew that I would be visiting familiar places. What I didn’t realise was that it would evoke so many ancestral memories. My great grandfather, William Lot Rogers married Elizabeth Trenwith and by 1875 had established a stone mason business in Penzance. It was their eldest son Robert who volunteered in 1900 to serve in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the Boer War in South Africa. Due to return to Cornwall on leave, he sadly fell sick on 14th December 1900, succumbing like so many in that conflict to enteric fever. He is commemorated on the Boer War memorial at Truro Cathedral, where I was able to place a poppy cross in his memory. His service and courage live with us evermore.
Mary Rogers
